Weekly Update

“Take the best team and the worst team. Line them up and you would find very little physical difference. You would find an emotional difference. The winning team has a dedication--they won't accept defeat.” - Anonymous
This week’s quote summarizes our team’s can-do attitude.  The late start to our first round game this past week did not affect our performance.  I am very proud of the way this team has embraced the “teamwork” philosophy.  This video is just one of many examples of the unselfish play on the field that occur on a regular basis.  The victory has placed us into the second round against Tiverton this coming week.  As we enter our final week of the season, we need to remain focused on our goals and keep up the intensity in our practice sessions.  Our semi-final game against Tiverton is scheduled for Wednesday May 30 @ 4pm at NHS.  The State Championship game is scheduled for Saturday Jun 2, 2012 @ 4pm.   ALL players are expected to be at the playoff games.

We will be holding a practice sessions at the regular times with the exception of Monday May 28 from 9-11 am.  A pasta party has been discussed for Tuesday night.  Details will be provided at practice.

“Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen- Michael Jordan
RecapThis quote epitomizes the heart, hustle and determination this team has displayed throughout the regular season.  The guts and will to win we showed this past Friday have taken us to our first team goal - Division 2 South Champions - but we are not finished yet.  Our second season starts tomorrow.  Going into the post-season, we need to maintain this focus and MAKE IT HAPPEN!

Thanks to the Heatherton and Cunnie families for the snacks and drinks on the bus ride home this week, the McGreen and Sabetti families for the pasta parties and all families who have supported, and continue to support the team through the season!

This Week’s Plans – Playoffs start this week.  The weather is looking more like April than May with showers expected Monday through Thursday so we may have to practice indoors on some days.  Indoor practice times will be announced if needed.  Although the official seedings have not been posted, we should be a 2 seed and have home field advantage throughout the playoffs.  The first round game will be Thursday May 24 at NHS.  In preparation for playoffs, varsity-only practices be held through the end of the season.  I will be contacting all players today to let you know if you are required to be at practice.  ALL players are expected to be at the playoff games.  Our schedule this week is as follows:

Weekly Update

HAPPY MOTHERS DAY!

“Players with fight never lose a game, they just run out of time”  - John Wooden

RecapThe quote above reminds me of our game against Tiverton this past week.  We played a very tough, physical Tiverton team, and despite being behind in the score, we never gave up the fight, showing we have the heart and will to win!  We learned some things from this game that we will take with us through the remainder of the season and into the playoffs.   A HUGE thanks to the Kennedy and DeCubellis families for providing pizza and snacks and drinks on the ride home.  The team devoured everything!!

Community Service – On Saturday May 13, 2012, the team met at The Garden of Hope and Remembrance in Christopharo Park for a spring cleanup of the garden.  The girls attacked the weeds, and debris with the same vigor they attack the game, and at the end of the cleanup the garden looked fabulous!  Mr. and Mrs. DeCubellis treated us to pizza and drinks and donated $100 to the NHS Girls Lacrosse account in appreciation for your work.  The timing was perfect as a group of people arrived to take graduation pictures after everyone left, and the garden looked beautiful!  Thanks so much John and Meg for your support and generosity!

This Week’s Plans – We play our last three games of the regular season this week:
Monday, May 14:            Home versus Westerly – SENIOR DAY.  Game starts at 4 pm.  Be at the field by 3pm.

Friday, May 18:                Home versus Portsmouth.  Game starts at 3:45 pm.  Be at the field by 3 pm.

Weekly Update

“It is amazing how much can be accomplished if no one cares who gets the credit” — John Wooden

Recap - I hope everyone was able to get some well-deserved rest this weekend.  Over the past he past two weeks we played six games - that’s one game shy of half the games in the season!  You should all be very proud of your efforts and contributions to the team’s successes to date.  With ten games behind us, we face our toughest competition this week against Tiverton on the road.  We only have one practice before the game so we need to reach deep inside and really focus on improving the things that got us to this point.  A big thanks to the Heatherton, Sullivan and Lemay families for providing drinks / snacks on the bus the past two weeks.

Playing Time - Over the past few weeks there have been indications that some of you are feeling you are not being given fair playing time during the varsity games.  Although I can appreciate and empathize with your feelings, you must know the decision on who plays during a game is never easy and never taken lightly.  We would like to play everyone during the games, but the fact of the matter is we are in a competitive league and must play who we feel is appropriate for the game situation.  Fundamentally, our decisions are based on “The characteristics of a complete player”, described on the coach’s philosophy page on our website.   I encourage ALL ATHLETES to take some time to reflect on these characteristics relative to the rest of the team.  If you still feel you are not being treated fairly you need to talk with me and coach Mark.

This Week’s Plans - Showers are predicted for the middle part of the week starting late Tuesday (weather).  The Tiverton game has been re-scheduled from Wednesday to Tuesday night.  Here is our game schedule for the week:
Tuesday, May 8: Away game against Tiverton (directions) @ 7:00 pm – no JV game.  Bus leaves at 5pm.

Rhode Island All Academic TeamThis award is open to any Sophomore, Junior or Senior athlete who is a Starter or significant contributor, has a GPA of at least 3.3 on a 4.0 scale for the first 3 quarters of the current school year or a cumulative GPA of 3.3 for the high school tenure.  The application form is attached to this Email.  It must be signed by your guidance counselor and returned to me by May 14, 2012.

Schedule Changes

Nice win today!  It’s been a grueling 2 weeks and still have one more game to play on Thursday.  After Thursday we will have played 6 games in 11 days!  That’s almost half the season in the past two weeks.  There are a few schedule changes you need to know about:

  •  The Away game against Tiverton on May 9th  is being re-scheduled due to a lack of officials.  No date has been set yet, but I will get this out as soon as I learn the new date.  I have requested the 10th, 8th or 7th in that order (preferably the 10th).
  •  Senior day has been changed from Friday May 18, 2012 to Monday May 14, 2012.  This should give underclassmen the weekend to prepare for senior day and still give us time to prepare for the three games we have that week.
  •  We will have a guest coach at tomorrow’s practice.  I will not be there as I have a business trip and will be out of town so I will be unable to attend.
  •  I am trying to coordinate a sports yoga session this coming Friday to recover from the past two weeks.  Should know for certain by Thursday.

See you Thursday.

Work hard – Play Hard!

Weekly Update

Recap
We are ½ way through the season and played our toughest competition this past week.  With home wins against Tiverton and Middletown, we ended the week with a road win against a tough Portsmouth team in difficult weather conditions.  As we start the 2nd half of the season we need to stay focused and work even harder as each and every team we play will be out to defeat us.  I was in a meeting the other day and noticed a poster on the wall with big letters that said “MAKE IT HAPPEN” which (for obvious reasons) made me think of the team.  The accompanying quote read:

"Greatness is not in where we stand, but in what direction we are moving. We must sail sometimes with the wind and sometimes against it—but sail we must and not drift, nor lie at anchor." —Oliver Wendell Holmes

What’s happened to this point is irrelevant - our season starts today.  At the beginning of the season, the team decided on several goals.  To achieve these goals we must keep our vision clear and focused, and work extra hard at practice on all the little things we need to improve upon.

A big thanks to the McKanna and Tucker families for providing drinks / snacks on the bus ride home after the game, and DeCubellis family for providing the much appreciated hot chocolate during the Portsmouth game.

This Week’s Plans
We have a busy week ahead of us.  The weather looks more seasonable, and rain showers are predicted during the middle part of the week.  Here is our schedule for the week:

Tuesday, May 1:               Home game against Chariho @ 3:45 pm, be on field by 3:00 pm.
Thursday, May 3:             Home game against Vets @ 4:30 pm, be on field by 3:45 pm.

Recap
This past week we notched another victory with a road win against Westerly – final score - 15 to 5Our record is now 4-0 and we are only one of two  undefeated teams left in D2 South.   The dedication and hard-work by each athlete during practice this past week will go a long way in keeping our momentum going into this coming week.  A big thanks to the DeCubellis family for providing drinks / snacks on the bus ride home after the game.

This Week’s Plans

Weekly Update

Recap
This past week we notched two more victories – Chariho 11-8 and Warwick Vets 13-5.  Our record is now 3-0 and we are tied for first place with Portsmouth in our division.  The rain on Thursday provided an opportunity to review the video from the Chariho game, evaluate some of our strengths and weaknesses and apply what we learned in practice AND during the Vets game.  A big thanks to Guerrino Boni from Olympic Physical Therapy who worked with the team on Tuesday and provided some additional warm-up exercises  focused on strengthening and preparing our ankles, knees and hips for lacrosse.  This seems to be working as the number of ankle complaints has decreased since Tuesday.    A big thanks to the O’Connell, Peterson, Harrison and Keller families for providing drinks / snacks on the bus rides home, and to everyone who brought salads, bread and dessert to the Pasta Party on Thursday.

This Week’s Plans
We have one away game this week on Friday against Westerly (directions).  The format for this game is reversed – JV will play first at 4pm followed by the varsity game at 5:30 pm.  Practice will be at the usual time Monday through Thursday 3:45 – 5:45.  We will also be practicing on Sunday, April 22 from 3-5 pm as we have three games the week after vacation on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.  The weather is supposed to be beautiful this week – almost summer like (weather).

Arch Supports
Generally, cleats do not provide adequate arch support, which leads to ankle, knee, hip and back pain.  Sam Harrington’s mom is a physical therapist and has provided a link  to some inexpensive arch support inserts that have helped Sam with joint pain.  Erica is now using these and has noticed immediate results.  It helps give their feet extra support to prevent ankle knee and back pain.  The inserts are inexpensive and easy to insert. Mrs. Harrison has offered to help insert the pads if you need it.  The company is Hapad- websiteWWW.Hapad.com.  1-800-232-9427 order scaphoid pads.  Size small or medium based on she size.  Only 5.50/pair.  You can email (harrison47@cox.net) or call her with any questions. 269-9510.

Weekly Update

Recap
Well the season is officially underway.  The first pasta party of the season was a huge success.  We watched the video of the injury fund game (thank-you Mrs. Timpson).  On Wednesday, we had our team pictures taken and notched our first victory of the season in our season opener - an 18-8 victory over PilgrimThirteen different players contributed to the score.  We shuffled players between attack, midfield and defense and everyone adjusted nicely.  Between the injury fund game and this game we have 15 different athletes that have contributed to scoring for us.  This team effort will give us a HUGE advantage the season as our opponents will not know where the next threat is.  Our goalie, Ceili O’Connell is also doing an outstanding job in net!  It’s hard to believe this is her freshman year.  Keep up the great work everyone!

This Week’s Plans
We have two away games this week.  We play Chariho (directions) on Wednesday and Warwick Vets (directions) on FridayBuses for these games will leave NHS at 2:30 pm sharpPlan to be ready to go by 2:15 pm.  Both games start at 4pm with JV contests immediately following at 5:30 pm.  Volunteers for snacks / drinks (list) can either bring them to school for our 2:30 departure or meet the bus after the game.    Olympic Physical Therapy will be at our practice this Tuesday to help  us with our stretching and strengthening our knees and ankles.  Temperatures are expected to be in the mid 50’s this week (weather).  Be prepared and wear warm layers to practice  and to the game this week.

Team Jackets / Uniforms
Team jackets for new players will be distributed at practice tomorrow.   Remember all athletes must wear BLACK spandex under their uniform.  Long sleeve and long length pants are recommended in the early part of the season.

Recap
Congratulations to our 2012 captains Samantha Sabetti, Gianna Tucker and Chandler Lemay. You all made excellent selections in your choice of leaders.  I know they will represent you, the team and our school well.  We had another great week of practice and ended the week with our Injury Fund game against Cranston East with a 16-10 Varsity victory!  JV also played well and ended up with a victory.  Great team efforts all around!  Please bring your injury fund money to practice Monday ($1 per athlete) as I forgot to collect this on Friday.  The conditioning we are doing at practice is starting to pay off.  Your overall speed and endurance is improving.  Make the time to get a run in over the weekend to maintain your conditioning.  Remember to warm up with some dynamic stretches before running to avoid injury.

Weekly Update

Recap
You all worked very hard last week and should be proud of your efforts.  The morning sessions have given us an extra kick-start to the season and should pay dividends in the long run.  This was something new we tried this year that was very successful.  Next year we will run morning sessions 1-2 days per week until spring vacation week.  Excellent job on this year’s fundraiser!  We are at nearly 100% of our goal.  I still need money from a few players, but we have collected enough to place the order for team jackets.

Game Schedule Change
Our home game against Westerly originally scheduled for May 7 @ 3:45 has been moved to May 14 @ 4:00.  This change has been reflected on the web page.  Away game snack / drink volunteers are also listed on the Game schedule page.  Thanks to all who volunteered.

This Week’s Plans
We have a lot to do this week to prepare for our Injury fund game this Friday March 30 against Cranston East.  As you can tell, the weather has changed to more seasonable temperatures.  The current forecast shows temps on the 40’s and 50’s this week (weather).  Be prepared and wear warm layers to practice  this week.

Uniforms / Team Jackets
Tomorrow we will hand out uniforms BEFORE practice.  Please plan on meeting in the gym at 3:30.  We will also measure sizes for jackets for the new players.  Returning players please wear your jackets tomorrow.  I will be ordering jackets this week.  Remember all athletes must wear BLACK spandex under their uniform.  Long sleeve and long length pants are recommended in the early part of the season.

Team Captains

We will be selecting captains this week via an on-line voting process.  Remember when voting this is not a popularity contest.  The process for choosing team captains is defined on page 14 in the NHS student handbook.  Each athlete should review this process.  In addition, the following character traits should be considered when selecting your team captains.  A captain must be:
  • a good role model on and off the field and must be respected, hard-working, committed, dedicated, humble, a leader by example, have integrity, dependable and have a positive attitude
  • well respected by teammates and the school community
  • respectful, loyal, cooperative, trustworthy, unselfish, caring and have pride in their school.
  • committed to being chemical free – will not use tobacco, alcohol or illegal drugs.
  •  a good student – maintains grades, punctual and abides by school rules
  • well-skilled, have knowledge of the game; is dedicated, and committed to the sport; displays good sportsmanship; is a team-player and is helpful to other players and have good communications skills.

An athlete must have played at least one year at the high school level to be eligible to be a team captain
