Weekly Update

Recap
You all worked very hard last week and should be proud of your efforts.  The morning sessions have given us an extra kick-start to the season and should pay dividends in the long run.  This was something new we tried this year that was very successful.  Next year we will run morning sessions 1-2 days per week until spring vacation week.  Excellent job on this year’s fundraiser!  We are at nearly 100% of our goal.  I still need money from a few players, but we have collected enough to place the order for team jackets.

Game Schedule Change
Our home game against Westerly originally scheduled for May 7 @ 3:45 has been moved to May 14 @ 4:00.  This change has been reflected on the web page.  Away game snack / drink volunteers are also listed on the Game schedule page.  Thanks to all who volunteered.

This Week’s Plans
We have a lot to do this week to prepare for our Injury fund game this Friday March 30 against Cranston East.  As you can tell, the weather has changed to more seasonable temperatures.  The current forecast shows temps on the 40’s and 50’s this week (weather).  Be prepared and wear warm layers to practice  this week.

Uniforms / Team Jackets
Tomorrow we will hand out uniforms BEFORE practice.  Please plan on meeting in the gym at 3:30.  We will also measure sizes for jackets for the new players.  Returning players please wear your jackets tomorrow.  I will be ordering jackets this week.  Remember all athletes must wear BLACK spandex under their uniform.  Long sleeve and long length pants are recommended in the early part of the season.

Team Captains

We will be selecting captains this week via an on-line voting process.  Remember when voting this is not a popularity contest.  The process for choosing team captains is defined on page 14 in the NHS student handbook.  Each athlete should review this process.  In addition, the following character traits should be considered when selecting your team captains.  A captain must be:
  • a good role model on and off the field and must be respected, hard-working, committed, dedicated, humble, a leader by example, have integrity, dependable and have a positive attitude
  • well respected by teammates and the school community
  • respectful, loyal, cooperative, trustworthy, unselfish, caring and have pride in their school.
  • committed to being chemical free – will not use tobacco, alcohol or illegal drugs.
  •  a good student – maintains grades, punctual and abides by school rules
  • well-skilled, have knowledge of the game; is dedicated, and committed to the sport; displays good sportsmanship; is a team-player and is helpful to other players and have good communications skills.

An athlete must have played at least one year at the high school level to be eligible to be a team captain
